Prescient warning of violence

Daniel Seidemann, an Israeli lawyer who campaigns for a more rational and just solution for Jews and Arabs in East Jerusalem, warned us on a Meretz USA Israel Symposium a few years ago that efforts to manipulate the path of the security barrier to wall off East Jerusalem from its natural social and economic links in the West Bank will cause East Jerusalemites to look more closely and more critically at how their lives compare with those of Jewish Israelis. He indicated that this may well cause violence.

This Haaretz column by Akiva Eldar, reflecting upon the two terrorist incidents perpetrated in recent months by Arabs of East Jerusalem, indicates that Seidemann’s warning was tragically on target.
