Knesset’s vote to eliminate the “reasonableness” criteria

Partners for Progressive Israel condemns in the strongest possible terms the Knesset’s vote today purporting to eliminate the “reasonableness” criteria for Supreme Court decisions.  Justice Minister Levin has made clear this is simply the first step in remaking Israel into what could only be called an illiberal majoritarian democracy, organized for the purpose of trampling on minority, especially Arab, rights.

We strongly support the hundreds of thousands of Israelis in the streets throughout Israel who are protesting this decision, as well as those preparing a legal challenge.

As we have continually emphasized, we see the repressive measures by this far-right government as inextricably related to the ongoing 56-year Occupation.  In order to establish true democracy and equality in Israel, the Occupation must be ended as well.

We call on Americans who care about Israel to make their feelings about these repressive measure known in every available forum, including to their elected representatives.

Partners will continue its work to end the Occupation and to simultaneously oppose the attempts of this government to dismantle internal Israeli democracy.

Sincerely,

Paul Scham
President
