If you follow the Israeli news, you probably noticed that the media has been filled with the Right-Wing outcry over the EU’s decision to label products from the West Bank, the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem. Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein said “This is a miserable decision of unparalleled hypocrisy.” Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked called the decision “anti-Israel and anti-Jewish… The European hypocrisy and their hatred of Israel has crossed every line.”
The so-called Israeli “center-left” followed suit. Parroting the extreme Right, Zionist Camp leader Isaac Herzog said “This decision is based on hatred, falsehood and ignorance, devoid of any moral value. ” And Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid tweeted: “Jews are being stabbed in the streets and the EU has given in to BDS. This decision discriminates against Israel and encourages terrorism.”
If the outcry ended with Israeli politicians one upping each other’s indignation, I probably would have said nothing. Herzog and Lapid, after all, have been fighting each other over who can best serve as Netanyahu’s press secretary. But Partners for Progressive Israel’s Facebook page filled with right-wing trolls hooting and hollering about Meretz’s support of the EU decision. And this morning in Haaretz Uri Misgav published an opinion piece in which he charges the Israeli media with peddling Netanyahu’s lies.
So I sat down and translated the following Facebook post that Roy Peled posted yesterday:
So how anti-Semitic are the Europeans?
I’ll tell you how much.
They’re so anti-Semitic that following Horizon 2020, they are investing over two billion shekels in Israeli industry.
They’re so anti-Semitic that they have signed a free trade agreement with Israel which they only have with a few countries outside Europe.
They’re so anti-Semitic that following the free trade agreement, their trade with Israel is almost 200 billion shekels a year.
They’re so anti-Semitic that Israelis are the only nationals in the Middle East, Africa, and almost all of Asia allowed to enter Europe without a visa.
How hypocritical are these Europeans?
I’ll tell you how much.
They are such hypocrites that they mark products made in Israel’s occupied territories but do not mark goods made in the Turkish occupied North Cyprus. Instead they fully boycott products from Turkish Cyprus.
They are such hypocrites that while many countries around the world violate human rights, Europeans complain that EU countries sell weapons to Israel. Instead Europe has a full weapons embargo on China, Russia and Syria.
They are such hypocrites that while other countries occupy territories, they insist on marking Israeli settlement products. So what if they declared that their trade agreement with Morocco does not include the Western Sahara. There are legal debates whether Europe should annul its fishing agreement with Morocco because the Western Sahara had not been excluded from it, and many European governments and banks boycott of the Western Sahara all together.
They are such hypocrites that they do not label products made in Crimea after the Russians annexed it. Instead, there is a full embargo on Crimea, but still, they don’t label its goods.
They are such hypocrites that they have and continue to have economic sanctions against Bosnia, Belarus, China, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, North Korea, Libya, Lebanon, Russia, Serbia, Tunis, Ukraine and Yemen, and 20 other countries, and only against Israel with all its human rights violations, they have not imposed a single sanction. Not one!!!
