Todd Gitlin is a professor of journalism and sociology and chair of the Ph. D. program in Communications at Columbia University, and an honorary professor at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. He is the author of 16 books, including The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage; The Twilight of Common Dreams: Why America Is Wracked with Culture Wars; Media Unlimited: How the Torrent of Images and Sounds Overwhelms Our Lives; The Whole World Is Watching; the novel Sacrifice, which won the Harold Ribalow Award for Fiction on Jewish Themes; and co-author of The Chosen Peoples: America, Israel, and the Ordeals of Divine Election. He has written for many publications (including the New York Times, New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Smithsonian, Columbia Journalism Review, billmoyers.com, New York Review of Books Daily) and is a longtime activist in behalf of a more decent and sustainable world.
